Under cover area
The under cover area is a favourite spot at lunch time and it for games and play. Parade is held in the under cover area each Tuesday at 2.45pm and also provides a space for events that we host like the Annual Fancy Dress Ball, Book Week Parade, guest speakers and incursions, ANZAC and Remembrance Day ceremonies.
Playgrounds
Kalamia State School has a fantastic array of play areas situated on site. We boast three separate play structures, large sand pit, rugby league/union oval, three a half basketball/ netball court, and a cricket pitch. We are endeavouring to add to the play areas to make play time, fun, adventurous and exciting.
Environmental sustainability projects
Sustainability is one of the key curriculum drivers here at Kalamia State School. We incorporate sustainability, in both a theoretical sense and through practical application, into as many aspects of our learning as possible.
Sustainability projects are integral to the operation of the school and new projects are trialled and introduced each year. Wherever possible, our sustainability initiatives are designed, built and managed on an ongoing basis by students. We currently have:
Water harvesting
Kalamia State School has two water tanks with a capacity of 20,000 litres. These tanks supply water for gardens.
Solar power
Kalamia State School installed solar panels and the system generates power for general school usage.
Wildlife
Around the school and B.A.R.K.S site, there is an abundance of wildlife. Sand monitors, turtles and bird life are frequent visitors to our school.
Orchard and vegetable gardens
There are numerous vegetable gardens around our school. Gardening commences in Prep and students plant vegetables according to the seasons. The produce from the vegetable gardens is used for tuckshop and munch and crunch each day.
Worm farm
Our worm farms utilises organic waste and provides our school gardens with valuable fertiliser in the form of worm castings and worm tea.
